Colleagues in Estates and Facilities have been collaborating with our Library and Arts team to implement a number of sustainability improvements on Highfield Campus.
In the Hartley Library, new roofing with extra insulation and LED lighting on Level 2 will make the building more comfortable and reduce energy use. This follows earlier work to draught-proof older windows.
More efficient air circulation units – which ensure that fresh air reaches all corners of the building – are also being installed.
Across the front of the Library, a major piece of work has taken place to improve the building’s 100-year-old drainage system. Surface rain water is now separated from foul water and sent to the local watercourse, reducing demands on the Highfield sewerage system and reducing the amount of water that has to be treated. This improvement will now be repeated in other buildings.
The Turner Sims team have also made a number of changes, including stocking new locally sourced organic ice cream, distributing brochures in compostable starch wrapping and instigating a nightly sweep of the concert hall to ensure no equipment has been left on unnecessarily.
Look out for more from Turner Sims colleagues in an upcoming issue of Staff Matters, where they will be talking about their environment commitments and how they are embedding sustainability into their day-to-day working.
