A video message from the VC and SUSU President: “We will continue to be welcoming to people from all over the world.”

Tonight at 23:00 the UK leaves the European Union.

In a video interview held in our Centenary Building, the Vice-Chancellor and SUSU President have been reflecting on the changes Brexit will bring to the country and to our University.

Mark E. Smith and Emily Harrison offered reassurance that our University will continue to be a welcoming, inclusive and global community.

They voiced their respect for the different viewpoints in the Brexit debate and said they were proud the University was a melting pot for people from across the world, with diverse opinions.

Mark E. Smith said:

“The UK government knows this country needs to make its way in the world and to enable universities to meet that goal we will, of course, continue to be welcoming to people from all over the world, no matter what their backgrounds are.”

“I, along with other senior colleagues in the University, have been lobbying for policies that will protect the things we care about most. We will continue to do so during the transition year – and beyond.”

Emily Harrison said:

“We know there are lots of different views on Brexit but, regardless of how you voted and what you think, it’s going to be a massive change for everybody.”

Emily added some advice for students:

“If you’re looking to have answers to your questions you can find all of that on the Brexit help pages on the website. You can also go and talk to the advice centre over at the Students’ Union where you can talk to our advisors who are free, independent and confidential.”
