Introducing the Southampton Giving Circles

Philanthropy played an important role in the creation of the University. A gift founded the institution and donations continue to fund our people, facilities, and research.

Today marks the launch of the Southampton Giving Circles: a new programme to recognise the significant lifetime giving of the University’s donors and legacy leavers.

Our donors are welcomed into each Circle based on their total contributions to the University, from £1,000 upwards. These include individuals and organisations whose generous donations have supported everything from student scholarships, to research laboratories to garden benches and world-leading facilities, and many interesting and important projects in between.

The seven Circles are named after some of our most important historical benefactors – from the University’s first and most well-known philanthropist, Henry Robinson Hartley, to Claude Montefiore, who donated his collection of 4,500 volumes of historical and classical texts to the University in 1938.
