Success for Southampton in QS World Subject Rankings

Once again this year, our University has performed well in the QS World University Rankings by Subject with four subject areas placing in the top 50 globally.

Nursing and Midwifery at Southampton lead the way, placing 5th in the world for the second consecutive year and third year in a row within the global top 10.

Statistics & Operational Research is our highest climber, rising 11 places to 37th worldwide. We are also ranked 40th overall for Earth-related Engineering, encompassing Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Geotechnical Engineering and Ocean Engineering, and 44th in the world for Archaeology.

A further eight subjects feature in the world’s top 100 (ranked between 51-100) including Civil & Structural Engineering; Earth & Marine Sciences; Electrical & Electronic Engineering; Geography;  Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering; Medicine; Physics & Astronomy; and Psychology.

Our University’s performance in all of the areas listed above is powered by our continued improvement in reputational rating among academic peers and employers around the world. Good scores for research citations and the ‘h-index’, which measures the productivity and impact of work published by scientists and scholars in the respective subjects, also contributed.

“Congratulations to all of the staff and students involved,” said Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Smith. “This is a really good sign of how well-rated we are by our peers as we truly are an international university that competes with the very best in the world.”

Please note: This year’s QS subject rankings are based on data collected during 2019. Any results from the recent World Rankings Project led by colleagues in the Change Portfolio Office won’t be apparent until later this year at the earliest, when the new QS World University Rankings are published. Southampton currently ranks 97th in the QS institutional ranking published last June.
