Nominations now open for Honorary Degrees/Fellows

Students and staff are invited to make nominations for the awards of honorary degrees and fellows to be awarded during graduation ceremonies in 2021.

Usually, nominations open in late summer and close in September but the whole process is changing a bit to encourage more of us to take an active role in putting forward the people we believe are most deserving of these honours.

This year’s deadline for nominations is close of business on Wednesday, 22 April. Applications are then sent to the appropriate Faculties for endorsement before going to the Honorary Degree Advisory Group. Professor Mark Smith, our President and Vice-Chancellor, will present the final shortlist to Senate and to Council for their approval.

When making a nomination, ensure that your candidate(s) meet the following criteria:

Honorary degrees

  • Recognition of an individual’s intellectual, creative and/or academic achievement;
  • International/national status of the nominee in their respective field;
  • Direct link(s) to the University of Southampton or to the City of Southampton.

Fellow of the University (intended for those who have an established connection with the University):

  • Support the interests and welfare of the University or a particular part of our activities;
  • Foster links between the University and other institutions within the UK and/or around the world.

You must submit a CV for the individual you are nominating (which can be drawn from information online) and you should not tell them in advance that you are nominating them.

Also, alumni are eligible for nomination – as are staff, past and present – but the success of their nomination depends on whether they meet the criteria.

Further information, and access to the nomination form, is available on the Honorary degrees/Fellow SharePoint site. Take time to visit the site and read the details carefully before submitting your completed form to Rosanna Newey in the Governance Office via [email protected]

Over the coming weeks, keep an eye on SUSSED and Staff Matters for more updates and tips to give your nomination an opportunity to be successful.
