Today, we’re proud to announce the launch of the Southampton Coronavirus Response Fund, which will support and accelerate the University’s urgent work in tacking the global pandemic.
The fund aims to advance a number of critical projects – from developing vaccines and innovative support technology, to ensuring our vulnerable students are cared for and our hospitals are well staffed.
Set up by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, the unrestricted fund will be used at the discretion of the University for where it is needed the most – be that research or student support.
The fight against coronavirus has united the world, and here at Southampton, we are addressing the crisis at the frontline and beyond. Our global community of alumni and supporters will today be invited to aid the appeal – and join the collective efforts of individuals and organisations from Southampton and beyond to combat the pandemic.
Mark E. Smith, President and Vice-Chancellor, has already joined Philip Greenish, Chair of Council, in making a personal gift to the fund. He said:
“We are appealing to our friends and supporters in the community to help fund the critical work that is happening right now at the University to protect, save, and support vulnerable lives in Southampton and across the globe.
“I’ve witnessed, first-hand, the enthusiasm and dedication of our staff in working long hours to tackle this deadly virus head-on,” Mark continued. “Their world-leading, multidisciplinary expertise is a major key to help unlock many of the solutions the world is looking for right now. All donations, big and small, will make a difference, and enable us to do even more.”
Emily Harrison, President of the Student Union, has also supported the fund:
“Back when the academic year started in September, I don’t think any of us could have predicted the situation we find ourselves in now. However, amongst the chaos and confusion, it’s been heart-warming to hear and see so many wonderful stories of kindness and people coming together. This fund is a fantastic example of just that, and is an easy way, if you are able, to make a real difference to other people.”
