Sustainability: Sport and Wellbeing colleagues set environmental objectives

Inspired by the University’s aim to reduce its environmental impact, Sport and Wellbeing have become one of the first departments to add a sustainability goal to their objectives for the year.

The team worked together to generate a list of 24 possible improvements and then each member of staff chose an objective to personally focus on.

Objectives include supporting the department’s work to go paperless: paper towels are already being removed from gyms, invoicing is now digital and timetables can be accessed via QR codes.

Other staff will be focusing on turning off equipment every night, making more sustainable purchasing decisions and bringing food to work in reusable containers.

Last year, Sport and Wellbeing planted 10 new oak trees at Wide Lane Sports Ground and sowed native wildflowers to encourage biodiversity.

The department has also identified a number of infrastructure improvements that will reduce energy usage in its buildings.

James Topping, Assistant Manager, Sport and Wellbeing said:

“Although the Sport and Wellbeing team are all working at home at the moment, we are continuing to develop our carbon cutting objectives. By reviewing our risk management and operational process documents, we are working out new ways of working that can meet our pledge. On our return to the office, we will be able to hit the ground running with these changes.

“We would be very happy to share our experience of developing environmental goals with other departments who are considering this option. You can email me at: James Topping.”
