John Hansard Gallery and Turner Sims are now focusing their energies to animate online spaces with inspiring arts and culture and, in the week that we welcome back students, they’ve got a toolbox of cultural wellbeing goodies lined up.

John Hansard Gallery announce the arrival of their new website on Friday, 24 April. This new platform will launch with online video commissions How to Fly and How to Live by artist David Blandy, which you can watch on the John Hansard Gallery website from 1 May – 30 June. Enjoy exploring the site and be sure to subscribe to their mailing list to receive updates and news.

The gallery is also pleased to be a partner in a nationwide project Ancient Mariner Big Read, curated by Philip Hoare (Professorial Fellow in English at the University), artist Angela Cockayne and Sarah Chapman (Director of The Arts Institute, University of Plymouth). Over 40 days, from Saturday 18 April, 40 famous voices from stage and screen – including Jeremy Irons, Lemn Sissay, and Tilda Swinton – read excerpts from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Head to the Turner Sims website on Friday 24 April at 20:00 to relax with a free-to-watch concert – Songs from the Spanish Exile/A Hum About Mine Ears with Harvey Brough, Clara Sanabras and University of Southampton Voices choir.

The Turner Sims team have also been busy preparing a soundtrack for the first week of term, in their #InternInsights playlist series. Discover a new playlist every day this week, curated by their brilliant student interns.

Arts at University of Southampton’s blog and digital channels are now dedicated to sharing the best of the arts from Southampton, Winchester and beyond.

The Arts team would love to hear your tips for keeping creative during lockdown, whether it is producing your own creative material or a cultural discovery you’re enjoying – they are looking for content to feature on their channels so please get in touch!
