Southampton ranked 11th amongst the world’s ‘Golden Age’ universities

Our university has retained its 11th overall place for the fourth successive year in the 2020 Times Higher Education’s (THE) table of ‘Golden Age’ universities.

The list comprises the world’s top 200 institutions founded as universities between 1945-1967. One of our international partners, the University of California, San Diego, once again takes the top spot overall, with Warwick (in seventh place overall) leading a list of 23 UK entries. Southampton is second amongst the UK universities featured.

Golden Age’ universities are characterised by the THE as institutions established in the post-war period when global higher education experienced rapid expansion and increasing investment in research.

The list is based on the same methodology as the Times Higher’s World University Rankings where Southampton is currently placed 122nd overall. Metrics relate to teaching and research environment, citation impact, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
