Celebrating the Class of 2020

As you are aware, we are unfortunately not able to commemorate our graduates’ success in person this year. We are therefore planning a series of online celebrations to celebrate their success over the next few months:

Congratulatory message to all awarded students – 24 July 2020

Our President and Vice Chancellor, our Chancellor, our outgoing and incoming SUSU Presidents and one of our Pro Chancellors, Jon Sopel, have recorded messages which will be sent to all awarded students to acknowledge their achievements during this strange year and to wish them well for the future. This will be sent on 24 July 2020, directly after the main award date.

It is likely that this, or a similar, message will be sent to all awarded students for the remainder of the year.

Online celebrations – aiming for early September 2020

We conducted a short social media poll, in conjunction with our colleagues in Student Comms. Albeit a small sample the result showed a clear desire from our graduands to participate in an online celebration with their peers this year. Medicine undergraduates, who were awarded in April, were the recipients of the first one of these online celebrations on Friday 17 July 2020. This event will be used as a template for any future events.

We’re currently compiling a ‘schedule’ to establish the number of events required in order to engage a production company as quickly as possible. We’ve based this on the Summer ceremony timetable, but we will be contacting you shortly to gain your support and advice, and to record messages from key personnel.

Winter graduation postponed

It has been confirmed that December Graduation ceremonies will be postponed, so plans will be made to host similar events for those students eligible to attend these ceremonies. Further details will follow in the autumn.

Face to face/physical ceremonies

We would like to assure staff that all students who successfully complete their studies this year will have the opportunity to attend an in-person ceremony in the future, when it is safe to do so. Unfortunately, we are unable to confirm when this will be possible. We are asking all awarded students to update their student record with a personal email address so that we can contact them with details in the future.

Further information is available on the graduation website.
