Our university has held its position in the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by Shanghai Ranking.
This year’s table shows that Southampton is ranked in the top 150 of universities overall and joint ninth in the UK. We are included in a group of institutions ranked ‘100-150’ so have not received a specific numerical ranking.
Universities are ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.
The latest ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, released in June this year, ranked four Southampton subjects in the top 20 globally and 13 in the top 50. Oceanography was ranked fourth in the world, Nursing and Telecommunications Engineering were both ranked 11th, and Aerospace Engineering came joint 20th.
Earlier this year, we also improved our overall position in the 2021 QS World University Rankings, climbing seven places to 90th overall and rose three places to 17th in the 2021 Complete University Guide amongst UK institutions – the highest climber of any university within the top 20 this year.
