The Corporate Communications and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion teams are delighted to present a special edition of Staff Matters, dedicated to equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I).
The edition brings together experiences from across our diverse community and explores the many aspects of ED&I, some you will be familiar with, but also many that you may not have had as much experience with. It dives into the personal experiences of its contributors, and discusses some of the ways you can increase your awareness and reach out to colleagues of all walks of life.
We meet Lydia, who asks if she has a duty to normalise neurodiversity and explains why wearing a mask is a complicated choice for her. In an interview with Gwen and Bhupinder of the BAME network we hear about their personal experiences, what they have learned through their roles as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Network, and more about the work of the group.
Richard Cartwright writes about the University’s progress in creating a more inclusive environment for those with disabilities and Hayleigh Sidhu shares her experiences of tokenism, and explains why she isn’t a tick in a box.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager Camilla Gibson says: “I hope this edition provides insight, offers food for thought and, importantly, gives you some practical ideas and ways to change that you can implement today.”
Our Vice-Chancellor, Mark E. Smith said: “Creating a truly inclusive community where every one of us feels welcome for who we are is fundamental to being the very best we can be- individually, collectively and institutionally.”
