Southampton maintains Tier 1 status with Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council

Our University has maintained its place amongst the UK’s leading research institutions after securing our Tier 1 partner status with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for a further three years.

Tier 1 contains the 20 universities with the largest portfolios of EPSRC grants, including Imperial, UCL, Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and Sheffield. Our portfolio of 124 current grants is worth over £205.6M, placing us seventh overall in that elite group.

The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences leads in terms of funding received from the EPSRC at Southampton. The portfolio also features awards made to the School of Psychology, the Business and Law Schools, Mathematical Sciences, and Human Development and Health in Medicine as well as Research and Innovation Services, demonstrating the wide-ranging research and related activities for which Southampton is known the world over.

Southampton’s continued inclusion in Tier 1 comes after a triennial review, covering the period 1 April 2017 – 31 March 2020, and based on an analysis of all live research, fellowship and training grants awarded following competitive peer review.

Professor Mark Spearing, Vice-President (Research and Enterprise) at the University of Southampton, said:
“Our success in maintaining our Tier 1 status with the EPSRC is testament to the rich vein of research activities that run through every Faculty and School within the University of Southampton. I want to thank and congratulate my colleagues from across the University who have made this happen through the quality of their activities which the EPSRC have recognised as delivering invaluable impact . Our long-standing relationship with the EPSRC is very important to us, our staff and students, and to the Council with whom we look forward to enjoying another three prosperous years of working together.”

Professor Philip Nelson, Interim Dean of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and former Executive Chair of the EPSRC, added:
“The relationship between the University of Southampton and the EPSRC goes well beyond funding. Our collective success in achieving the level of funding and other awards from the EPSRC is a catalyst for networking and collaboration and one of the major reasons that Southampton is so well-respected for its research and related activities across the UK and around the world. We’re delighted that our Tier 1 status will continue and we look forward to many more successes in the months and years to come.”
