Black History Month: events next week

Black History Month began on 1 October, and throughout the month colleagues across the University will be organising and hosting a series of events to celebrate the achievements of Black people in the UK. Events are free and open to all.

Coming up next week:

Writers In Conversation: Jamaican-born Fiction Writer Donna Hemans

12 October 19:30

Donna Hemans, award-winning writer from Jamaica and Washington, D.C., reads from her new novel “Tea by the Sea” before speaking with Carole Burns, our Head of Creative Writing. They’ll be discussing the importance of telling diverse stories; the role of culture and history in literature; and the creative process. The event will be broadcast live on YouTube and Facebook, giving you the chance to ask questions.

In conversation with David Brauner and Bryan Cheyette on Black-Jewish relations in American Literature

13 October 18:00-19:30

Chaired by Dr Devorah Baum, this event will feature Professor David Brauner, discussing Blackness and Jewishness in the fiction of Howard Jacobson, and Professor Bryan Cheyette who will discuss a selection of literature in relation to whether black Harlem was in fact a “ghetto” in stark contrast to the Jewish embrace of the Lower East Side of New York as the ur-ghetto.

The event is in collaboration with the Centre for Imperial and Post Colonial Studies (CIPCS), and Part of the Parkes Institute Seminar Series 2020/21.

History of Black History Month in Southampton

14 October 12:00

Black History Month has always been an opportunity to open the window into areas of past Black achievements that have been somewhat overlooked due to the perceptions and biases that colonialism has imposed. Lou Taylor will talk about how Black History Month started in the UK, its importance and why we should continue to celebrate black achievements.

The talk is organised by the Black Asian Minority Ethnic Network at the University of Southampton.
