Professor Sir Stephen Holgate Distinguished Lecture – watch the lecture now

On Thursday 15 October we were delighted to hear Professor Sir Stephen Holgate deliver his Distinguished Lecture: Understanding and living with COVID-19 – past, present and future?

You can now watch the lecture here:

Over 650 people from around the world (including alumni, staff, students and other members of our global community) joined us for our first Distinguished Lecture this academic year, hosted by Professor Mark Spearing, Vice President Research and Enterprise. This was also our first virtual Distinguished Lecture since the arrival of COVID-19 and we were delighted with the response.

Recognised as one of the top specialists in his field, both nationally and internationally, Professor Holgate has transformed our understanding of respiratory diseases during his 40-year career at Southampton. His many leading appointments, including Government advisor, underline his high level of expertise and experience. He was also knighted for his services to medical research in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday honours list.

Sir Stephen has devoted his career to focusing on the interface between basic sciences and clinical application to improve our understanding and treatment of allergy and asthma and remains one of the world’s foremost spokespeople on the dangerous impact of air pollution.

During his 30min lecture Sir Stephen gave real insight into how vital research at the University is enabling us to move quickly to address the pandemic and we welcomed strong audience engagement and some thought-provoking questions.
