Black History Month began on 1 October, and throughout the month colleagues across the University will be organising and hosting a series of events to celebrate the achievements of Black people in the UK.
All events are free and open to all. Coming up next week:
Black Heroes of Mathematics Conference
Monday 26 October- Tuesday 27 October
The British Society for the History of Mathematics, The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and the London Mathematical Society, are holding a two-day conference on Black Heroes of Mathematics.
The vision of the conference is “To celebrate the inspirational contributions of black role models to the field of mathematics” and the event will feature a balance of technical talks by internationally renowned black speakers that include some detail of career paths and experience to provide a testimonial dimension.

Launch of Culture Club (Network of Networks)

Our University is launching a group, which comprises of local Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic community networks, to work collaboratively, to celebrate cultural diversity and raise awareness of challenges which Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic community groups face in daily lives.
The newly formed group will also aim to identify ways to overcome such challenges and promote best practice. Participation is by invitation only. If you know of a Network which may be interested in joining this group please contact [email protected]
Black History Matters: In Conversation with Don John
Thursday 29 October 18:00-19:00
A consultant in the field of community cohesion and pioneer in the development of race and diversity issues across the region for over forty years, Don John will discuss 500 years of Black history in the city, his own experiences, the persistence of racism in the UK, and the local importance of the Black Lives Matter movement.
