Centre for English Identity and Politics Webinar Series 2020

The Centre for English Identity and Politics is delighted to invite you to two webinars.

Beyond Asymmetric Devolution: 26 November 14:00 – 15:30

  • Ian Murray MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland
  • Akash Paun, Institute for Government
  • Prof Ailsa Henderson, University of Edinburgh
  • Prof Stephen Cushion, University of Cardiff
  • Jack Sheldon, University of Cambridge

The current devolution settlement is 20 years old but, as the responses to COVID-19 have made clear, neither the culture and practice of the media, the language of politics, nor the machinery of government have evolved to reflect the constitutional reality.

This webinar will examine: changing views of an asymmetric union; UK (London) media coverage of devolved nations; the meaning of ‘British’ in different parts of the union; and the challenges of building a state in a multi-nation union. With growing tensions within the union, we’ll ask whether constitutional reform could bring a better alignment between the practice and language of politics and the media and the distribution of power.

Register here for 26 November.

English Politics and Values: 9 December 13:00 – 14:30

  • David Lammy MP, Shadow Justice Minister
  • Paula Surridge, University of Bristol
  • Simon Winlow, Northumbria University
  • Jon Lawrence, University of Exeter

Over the past decade one group of English voters has re-shaped the politics of England, the union and of Europe. This webinar will explore different perspectives on these voters: their politics and values; their relationship with the Labour Party; the evolution of working-class identity; and the wider relationship between identity and politics

Register here for 9 December.
