Southampton has successfully retained the European Commission HR Excellence in Research (HREiR) award following our 8-year review to assess how we are progressing with implementing the Concordat principles. The award is recognition of our dedication to delivery of actions to improve the skills and work environment of researchers. There was also acknowledgement for the positive developments with our work to recognise the issues impacting research staff.

A new version of the Concordat was launched in 2019 following an extensive consultation across the sector. The new Researcher Development Concordat was designed to clearly define the specific requirements, cast as obligations, for academic institutions. In keeping with our support for researchers, the University is delighted to confirm that we have become a signatory to the new Concordat. Over the next year, we will work with researcher colleagues and stakeholders to review the new responsibilities and develop a long-term action plan for their implementation.

Professor Mark Spearing, Vice-President Research and Enterprise commented, “The HREiR award is a wonderful achievement and reflects the University’s commitment to developing world-leading researcher staff. Joining the new Concordat will enable us to further develop our support for researchers and ensure they have the tools needed to achieve high quality research.”
