On Tuesday 24 November the Engagement & Advancement Events Team held an online ‘in conversation’ lecture with Professor Tatem entitled ‘Pandemic Response & Data Driven Decision Making’. Andy gave a fascinating insight into the vital work that the WorldPop group is involved with, and how this has helped them understand the spread of COVID-19 using geospatial, mobile phone and health data.
One of the areas Andy discussed was how Worldpop’s vital work has supported many policy makers, including Imperial College which contributed to the Government’s decision to impose the first UK lockdown. The team also worked with a number of organisations including Facebook, the Office of National Statistics, SAGE and the Cabinet Office, using the data they had gathered on movement and trends across the UK.
