The empty plinths

The Dame Barbara Hepworth sculptures go for conservation treatment

If you have been walking through Highfield campus during the last couple of days, you may have noticed the two empty plinths where the sculptures by Dame Barbara Hepworth usually stand. These artworks have been removed temporarily for conservation treatment and will return in the new year.

The largest of the two sculptures, Two Figures, can normally be found close to the West side of Building 38 and is on long-term loan to the University from the Hepworth Estate. Two Forms in Echelon, normally sits across the stream, close to the Physics building and belongs to the University’s art collection.

The two sculptures are popular with staff and students alike, with Two Figures frequently chosen as a backdrop to graduation photographs.

October 2021 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the loan from the Hepworth Estate and we look forward to staff, students and the general public being able to continue enjoying these artworks when they return to campus following conservation treatment.

The University has been a long-standing supporter of arts and culture in Southampton. With ambitions growing for Southampton 2025 UK City of Culture Bid throughout 2021, we look forward to the whole University community being a part of this exciting creative journey for the city.
