Changes to Open Access publishing – Plan S implementation

If your research is funded by Wellcome or UKRI, then prepare for change in Open Access policies soon. Plan S implementation started on 1 January 2021 and many funders are consulting or have changed their open access polices to reflect the key principles of Plan S – aiming to achieve full and immediate open access for all publicly funded research.

UKRI are consulting on their new Open Access (OA) policy. Their document setting out the proposed OA policy and related considerations received over 350 responses and the policy is set to be published in the 2nd quarter of 2021. We will keep you informed and explain any changes on our webpages.

The Wellcome Trust’s open access policy changed on 1 January 2021. If your research is supported by a Wellcome grant and you cannot publish in a fully open access journal or through a Transformative Agreement, you will need to use the Coalition S Rights Retention Strategy which supports researchers to publish in the journal of their choice. We have written a briefing document explaining the changes to Wellcome Funding in more detail.

If you are not sure how this affects you and where you would like to publish, please do contact us at [email protected]
