Cheaper 1st class post with Royal Mail barcode system

A new system for sending your 1st class post items comes into effect in January 2021. The post room will adopt the Royal Mail barcode system for sending 1st class post.

The University sends almost as much 1st class as 2nd class post. First class post is much more expensive, but in many cases using 2nd class would be adequate.

The Royal Mail 1st class barcode option is slightly cheaper than our current 1st class franking option, but it will save money if departments use it. To access this system departments will need to prepare their 1st class post differently.

The system involves adding a barcode to each item bearing a number relating directly to the University (the image above is our number and barcode).

The artwork and instructions on how to prepare and present the barcoded 1st class post are on a fact sheet within the Post & Portering web pages on SharePoint, which include details of how to access the Royal Mail website to create artwork.

Until the end of February 2021 dispensation will be given for items not prepared properly. After this anything intended for 1st class post not presented correctly (not bearing the barcode) will be sent by 2nd class post.
