An update on teaching

*This is a message from the Vice-President Education, and was emailed to all staff and students this morning.*

Dear Colleagues,

As you are aware, following government guidance, all teaching since 9 December 2020 has been delivered online (other than in a few exempt Health-related and Education programmes).

Having considered further government and public health announcements, and because we want to provide as much clarity and stability to students and members of staff as possible, the University Executive Board has made the decision that all classroom-based teaching activity will continue to be fully online at least until 12 April, following the Easter vacation.

Subject to further government advice, it may be possible to restart some in-person, on-campus teaching in specialist teaching spaces (e.g. labs, studios, performance and practice spaces) and some field work activity before 12 April. If that turns out to be possible, we will be in contact with relevant members of staff and students.

However, until further notice (and again, following government guidance) there will be no in-person, on-campus teaching at our UK campuses, other than in the programmes previously listed as exempt.

We recognise that the current limit in offering in-person, on-campus teaching poses significant challenges, and we will continue to support both staff and students as best we can through this period. We remain committed to delivering high-quality education and student support online, and will work closely with schools and faculties to ensure that we prioritise the resumption of those in-person teaching activities that are key to meeting programme learning outcomes as soon as government advice and the public health context makes that possible.

Best wishes,
Alex
