MATHS=E+D+I Art Competition

Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity are at the core of mathematics. Can you express this concept in an art form?

All University of Southampton students and staff are invited to participate in the Maths=E+D+I Art Competition.

Background

The validity of a theorem, the uncanny ability of mathematics to describe, measure and model the world around us are independent of the gender, race, social and economic class of mathematicians and, more controversially, even of their humanity, as in the computer-based proof of the four colour theorem. Mathematics can also act as a force for positive change by highlighting unjustifiable differences, from the gender pay gap to race bias in sentencing. And yet, significant inequalities within mathematics exist. For example, only approximately a third of Maths A-level students are female. Can we make Mathematics more inclusive? And, ultimately, can Mathematics make the world more inclusive?

The purpose of this art competition is to remind us all that mathematics is open to everyone and that nobody should think that mathematics is not for them because of who they are, rather than what they like. The School of Mathematical Sciences is looking at new ways to represent mathematics, from the point of view of Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity, in posters displayed in the Mathematical Sciences buildings for the interest and enjoyment of our students, staff and visitors.

The School of Mathematical Sciences invites you to use your imagination and your artistic skills to produce art that links mathematics to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity. Any art form is suitable, but only images can be submitted. These can be the art form itself, e.g. a sketch, a cartoon, a graphic poster, calligraphy, a digital image, a photo, or they can be the photo of a non-digital art form, e.g. a textile, a sculpture, a dance movement, whatever may have inspired you. Textual entries are allowed but will be judged mainly on their visual appeal. We are particularly interested in submissions that have a theme local to Southampton, though this is not a requirement to enter the competition.
