Invitation to take part in Bike-Barometer 2020-2021

Bike-Barometer 2020-2021 is a collaborative, international project led by the University of Valencia, with UK data collection led by Dr Rich McIlroy, Research Fellow in Global Road Safety at the University of Southampton.

As transportation dynamics are constantly changing, countries are opting for alternative, more sustainable means of transport. Among these means the bicycle stands out, thanks to its relatively low cost, ease of accessibility, the health benefits it presents, and its environmental sustainability.

Nevertheless, road traffic collisions involving cyclists have become a growing concern for public health and road safety researchers and practitioners around the world. There are many factors contributing to cyclist-related road trauma, from infrastructure and users at the sharp end, to the laws and policy frameworks set at national and international levels; however, the end user can often bear the brunt of the blame. Bike-Barometer 2020-2021, which spans 15 countries, aims to look more deeply at this. Do people’s cycling-related behaviours and attitudes really explain crash involvement? And how are these, and other demographic factors, related to each other?

To help answer some these questions the project team has developed an online questionnaire that takes around 15 minutes to complete. The team is inviting anyone over the age of 18 who has used a bicycle in the recent past and is resident in the UK (regardless of your nationality) to take part, with all responses remaining entirely anonymous.

The survey is approved by the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences Ethics Committee, ID 63069. Further details are available through the questionnaire link.
