International Transgender Day of Visibility

Today, 31 March, is International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV). Founded in 2009, it is an annual awareness day, internationally celebrating the accomplishments of transgender people and raising awareness of the challenges still facing the Trans community.

Recorded transphobic hate crime has doubled in the last three years and one in seven people are reporting their experiences. According to Galop one in four trans people have been threatened with or experienced transphobic violence. One in three UK employers will not employ a trans person and three in ten had experienced transphobia at work. The most frequently described experiences were being asked invasive questions, being deadnamed and verbal abuse.

Chrysalis is a local charity which supports transgender, non-binary and questioning people, their families, and close friends. They have put together a list of events organised by other organisations, to celebrate TDoV which all community members can participate in.

If you are interested in learning more about what it means to be Transgender, you can read a previous article on Transgender concepts and definitions written by members of the Pulse LGBT+ Staff Network.

The Network welcomes all staff and research postgraduates. To join email [email protected].

Students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, can join the SUSU LGBTQ+ society.
