As a University student, you are constantly learning something new: this could be learning related to your course, learning new transferrable skills or learning life skills. Did you know that the act of learning something new can be good for our wellbeing?
Trying something new can pose a challenge and overcoming this can be good for our self-esteem. Setting ourselves a goal and sticking to it creates a sense of achievement and equips us with skills to take on large goals in life.
Learning something new also links to some of the other Five Ways to Wellbeing – Take Notice and Connect. When trying a new activity, we are likely to be concentrating on the present moment rather than focusing on any worries or stresses we may have. Depending on the activity you choose, you may have the opportunity to connect with others and participate in a community of other people with the same hobby.
You may wish to use the Easter vacation period to dedicate some time to learning something new.
How you can keep learning:
- Join a Students’ Union society and try out a sport or an activity you’ve been interested in – or even one you haven’t heard of before! You can join a society at any point in the academic year, and if you have any questions beforehand you can find contact details on the society’s page.
- Build your wellbeing knowledge by learning some self-help techniques or following a course on Togetherall.
- iSolutions have compiled some training playlists on Linkedin Learning – why not try one of the videos they recommend for your course?
- Try out a recipe for a dish you haven’t tried before.
- You could try out a new hobby like writing, drawing, painting, or knitting.
- If you’ve wanted to learn a language for a while but can’t find the time, try learning one or two new words each day.
