Celebrated since 2008, 26 April marks Lesbian Visibility Day, and the start of Lesbian Visibility Week, another important date in the diary for many of our colleagues.
Lesbian Visibility Week celebrates lesbians and is an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity with every woman within the LGBT+ community. There is also International Lesbian Day, which has been observed since the 1990s.
Pulse LGBT+ Staff Network believe that it is essential that Lesbian Visibility Week is used as a voice for unity and lifts ALL women, especially those who come from marginalised communities. Recent research (Pride Matters survey, conducted by Pride In London 2018) has shown that gay women are almost twice as unlikely to be out in the workplace as gay men.
The Pulse LGBT+ Staff Network want to support an environment and culture that recognises, celebrates and importantly supports our lesbian, transgender and queer women staff and students. We will be running a safe listening space, with Aysha Rahman of the University’s EDI Team, open to all women, to attend and discuss their experiences of life, love and work or to raise questions, issues or concerns in a safe environment.
The session will be held on Wednesday 28 April – 12.30 to 13.30.
If you’d like to attend, please email [email protected] and we will forward a meeting invitation to you.
If you have a personal story of achievement that you’d like us to celebrate during this week, please get in touch!
