Festival of Doctoral Research – competition entries and award nominations now open!

The Doctoral College are busy preparing for this year’s Festival of Doctoral Research, which is taking place online from 9-10 June, and we wanted to remind you of the upcoming deadlines for the competitions and awards that will form part of this year’s festival.

3 Minute Thesis

Can you take on the challenge of presenting your doctoral research to a general audience in under 3 minutes? The deadline for this year’s 3 Minute Thesis competition has been extended and you now have until Monday 3 May to enter! Find out more and enter here.

Director’s Awards

Do you know a fellow postgraduate researcher who has achieved something remarkable this year, or made a great contribution to the doctoral community?

Nominations are now open for our Director’s Awards – any current doctoral researcher can be nominated in one of the following areas:

  • Education
  • Enterprise
  • Citizenship and Community
  • Public Engagement
  • Special Commendation

Contributions of any scope or scale will be considered, so if someone has made a meaningful contribution to you or others, please consider nominating them.

We’re particularly keen to receive nominations that reflect the broader contribution made by PGRs to the COVID-19 response – whether that’s being involved in COVID research or supporting clinical healthcare work, to helping other students with their learning or wellbeing during the past year.

Entries close on Monday 10 May, so please visit the Festival SharePoint site and get nominating! All nominees will be listed on SharePoint, so whether they win or not, they’ll still be recognised for their contribution.

Research Poster and Creative Representations of Research competitions

The deadline for the Research Poster and Creative Representations of Research competitions is also Monday 10 May – these competitions are all about communicating your research and its impact clearly and creatively, so get your thinking caps on and enter!

Taking part in the Poster Presentation competition is a great way for you to present your work and practice answering questions about your research. We’re running a ‘Producing an engaging research poster’ session on Monday 17 May where you can learn what makes a good poster and what tools are available when creating your posters.

New this year, the Creative Representations of Research competition is where you can challenge yourself to think about your research in a different way. From baking your PhD in a cake to capturing it via a photo, poem or dance, in this competition the only limit is your imagination.

We’re looking forward to receiving your award nominations and competition entries and coming together this summer to celebrate all of your achievements. In the meantime, why not check out the SharePoint site to find out more about what we have planned for this year’s Festival?
