Staff and students are invited to a free webinar, with the Chief Economist of the Bank of England as one of the speakers, on the subject of the government’s ‘Levelling- Up’ agenda, on Monday 17 May at 17:30 to 19:30.

Bournemouth Pier: the town is included in the levelling up agenda

The event is organised by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)’s ‘Towns and the Cultural Economies of Recovery‘ project. It is co-hosted by the Southampton Institute for Arts and Humanities, History & Policy and the Institute for Historical Research.

You can book your place here.

The government’s ‘Levelling Up’ agenda comes at a time when COVID has revealed, and often increased, structural inequalities in the UK. These range from employment to housing, education and healthcare. They include disparities in wealth, widening gaps in life expectancy across ethnicity, and uneven access to resources, from libraries to leisure centres.

Yet there is little consensus about what ‘levelling up’ means. This forum will explore the concept using both contemporary and historical perspectives – from Whitehall to town halls.

Speakers include:

  • Andrew Haldane, Chief Economist, Bank of England
  • Melissa Benn, Writer and Campaigner
  • Owain Lloyd James, Head of Places Strategy, Historic England
  • Will Jennings, Director, Centre for Towns; Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, University of Southampton
  • Helen Nicholson, Professor of Theatre and Performance, Royal Holloway, University of London /Jenny Hughes, Professor in Drama, University of Manchester
  • Simon Szreter, Professor of History and Public Policy, University of Cambridge
  • Jonathan Gross, Lecturer in Culture, Media & Creative Industries, King’s College London
