New round of Global Partnerships Award to be launched

The International Office is launching a new iteration of the Global Partnerships Award and interested applicants can register for a briefing session at 12 noon on Thursday 10 June.

Partnership building in New Delhi, India, September 2017. Left to right: Keith Johnstone, Director of International Relations; Indian government minister Nitin Gadkari; Professor K Murali, Head of Department for Ocean Engineering at IT Madras; Professor Ajit Shenoi, founder and first Director of SMMI

They are seeking innovative project proposals that clearly state the benefit of the partnership eg. complementarity of research; internationalising the curricula or student experience; potential of the partnership to grow in scope and depth. Collaborations that have the potential to become game changing in their field are welcome.

To promote the strategic priorities of the University of Southampton and to raise the University’s international profile funding has been made available for two schemes:

The Global Partnerships Award offers support to develop joint international research or education-related activities with an international dimension that are at an early stage of development.

Early career researchers (PGRs, postdocs and junior faculty members) can propose virtual collaborative activities to develop new research or educational projects. They might have the opportunity to visit international partners to cultivate research links at an institutional and individual level in 2022. Academic staff might lead workshops between Southampton and priority partner colleagues to develop research, teaching or capacity building projects (with funds of up to £15K per project).

In both cases, priority is given to proposals that are interdisciplinary and nurture multilateral partnerships committed to excellence. The intention is to seed collaboration with the University of Southampton’s priority and Worldwide Universities Network partners.

The Global Fellowship Award offers support for senior academics to visit Southampton under a non-stipendary visiting fellowship. This prestigious University Fellowship scheme aims to attract the highest calibre academics from our priority partners to collaborate with UoS staff.

It is a non-salaried, non-residential Fellowship, which fosters research and/or education collaboration over a three-year period.

All funding applications are expected to include planning to establish longer term funding sources to ensure the future sustainability of the relationship. Partnerships with the potential to benefit the wider university community and forge cross-School or Faculty links will be viewed favourably.

Register here for the Global Partnerships Award briefing session at 12 noon on Thursday 10 June.

At this session you will be able to find out more details of the awards, as well as hear from some of the 2019 awardees.
