The Engagement & Advancement Events Team is delighted to present recordings of two recent events held in May:
- Artificial intelligence and the Future of Cancer
- Beating Blindness
On Monday 17 May the team was delighted to be joined by over 300 viewers from around the world to learn about Artificial intelligence and the Future of Cancer.
Hosted by BBC Technology Journalist and alumna, Zoe Kleinman, this event saw Southampton’s own Professors Tim Underwood, Gastrointestinal Surgery and Head of Cancer Sciences, and Gopal Ramchurn, Professor of Artificial, take centre stage to demonstrate how AI is helping create a new blueprint, built to better understand cancer, and aid the discovery of tailored treatment.
Both Tim & Gopal shared their extensive knowledge and research successes on this subject and gave thought-provoking and informative answers to questions asked during the Q&A session.

On Thursday 27 May the team was joined by more than 200 global viewers to learn about the latest studies being carried out by the University of Southampton Vision Science Research Team to fight sight loss.
The host, Mr Andrew Luff, was joined by University academics and Consultant Ophthalmologists Professor Andrew Lotery and Mr Jay Self, together with Lecturer in Vision Sciences, Dr Arjuna Ratnayaka. The panel shared their extensive knowledge and research successes, exploring topics including the impact of an unhealthy high-fat diet on the retina, an exclusive update on the latest paediatric studies and an overview on research into age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
