Our growing global reputation has led to a remarkable rise of 13 places in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2022, placing us 77th among the 1,300 universities ranked overall by QS – a climb of 25 places since 2018 and our highest QS ranking in nearly a decade.
Our President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark E. Smith praised colleagues for their excellent contributions that ultimately made this achievement possible.
“I extend a heartfelt thank you to all of my colleagues across the University for all you have done to help us to achieve this recognition,” said Professor Smith.
“To have improved our position by more than 10 places from within the top 100 is a really strong performance and a true indicator of our status as a world-leading university as seen by our peers and those in industry and other sectors with whom we collaborate and who continue to recruit our high-quality graduates in great numbers.
“Being recognised in the top 100 is something that we, at Southampton, will celebrate as formal recognition of the dedication shown by our hard-working and trail-blazing staff and students, and our impact-led and globally-relevant research, all of which is creating a positive impact across the globe.”
This year we’ve scored particularly well for our reputation among employers, moving up 31 places in this category, while increasing our research citations per faculty, leading to a rise of 41 places. In addition, we improved 21 places for the proportion of students who are international, a strong reflection of the University’s continued popularity amongst students from around the world.
Data relating to the corresponding subject by subject performance in the 2022 QS World University Rankings will be available in autumn this year, with the QS World University Rankings by subject themselves released in March 2022.
