Launch of the Strategic Plan – Equality Diversity and Inclusion

We have now launched our Strategic Plan – Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) which will play a vital role in helping us embed EDI throughout our community and intuitional processes. You can read the full plan on our website.

“Our Strategic Plan – Equality Diversity and Inclusion is a real step forward for us as a university community, showing us not just where we are, but where we want to be and how we’re going to achieve this. From personal interactions to governance, education to research, equality, diversity and inclusion is the cornerstone to help us be the best institution we can be, and enable all of our community to reach their full potential. This Strategic Plan belongs to all of us, and we all have a part to play in bringing it to life.” – Mark Spearing, Vice-President Research and Enterprise, Executive Champion for Equality Diversity and Inclusion

Our mission is to create an inclusive university community, and our vision is that this is a community where, as an individual student or member of staff:

  • You feel welcomed for who you are, and this is a place where you feel that you can influence the way we do things now and in the future
  • You feel included and supported to reach your true potential
  • You are intellectually stretched and challenged
  • You value the diversity of the wider community and play your part in supporting the mission of inclusivity

And that as a community:

  • We intentionally create space and time to truly engage, listen and learn from each other
  • We all actively take steps to understand the impact of our own actions and behaviours
  • We value and engage with each other by utilising our differences in order to create high quality work, research and education
  • We intentionally lead and influence social change at both a local and national level – we are seen as innovative and bold leaders
  • By working in this way, we will change the world for the better

“I genuinely hope that each person, student or staff, that reads this plan can see how they individually can play their role in creating an inclusive university community and I hope that the five point model for cultural change gives people a clear sense of how we together will keep moving towards an inclusive university community. I can guarantee that I will work as hard as I can to bring the vison set out in this plan to life” – Camilla Gibson, Equality Diversity and Inclusion Manager.

Staff can keep an eye out for the next edition of Staff Matters featuring a filmed conversation between several colleagues and a student on how they relate to the strategy, what EDI means to them, and the work they’ve been doing across the University.
