It is with great regret that we report the death of Professor Victor Snaith, who was Head of Pure Mathematics at Southampton from 1998 to 2004.
An expert in both algebraic topology and algebraic number theory, Professor Snaith moved to the UK from McMaster University where he also played a leading role in the Fields Institute and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Here in the UK he was an active member of the Heilbronn Institute and was well known for his mentorship of junior colleagues, his promotion of outreach and of applications of even the most abstruse mathematics.
In addition to a prodigious and influential academic output, he wrote text books and novels, loved music as a concert-goer and as a classical guitarist. He acted, danced and in all things was a force of nature. He will be much missed by all who knew him.
