The National Student Survey (NSS) took place between February and April 2021 and achieved a response rate of 67 per cent.
Across the Russell Group and the whole of the higher education sector, the NSS results were lower this year reflecting the challenges caused by the pandemic and the subsequent need for social-distancing, multiple lockdowns and changes to in-person teaching.
Our overall student satisfaction score this year is 79.3 per cent, which although being a drop of 6 percentage points on last year, still leads to a rise of 19 places in the sector to reach number 32.
For the first time, overall satisfaction at Southampton is significantly ahead of the sector and is a strong performance against our competitor set, the Russell Group and the sector.
The results of the NSS are factored into the University’s planning process and participating in the NSS can help us directly improve the experience of Southampton students.
The Vice-Chancellor, Mark E Smith said:
“This result reflects a fantastic effort by colleagues in such difficult circumstances. I would like to say thank you to everyone across the University. The understanding and support of our students is a really welcome boost to all colleagues who have worked tirelessly to teach and support them through unprecedented circumstances. To have gained our first positive flag for overall satisfaction in such a situation is particularly noteworthy.”
