One of 14 Collaborative Awards for Teaching Excellence (CATE) announced by AdvanceHE today, the accolade recognises and rewards collaborative work that has had a demonstrable impact on teaching and learning and highlights the key role of teamwork in higher education.

The MOOC team drives and supports the creation of open online courses. Its collaborative approach involves academics, professional services staff, students and external organisations in providing education to thousands of learners, offering opportunities for staff and students to acquire digital education skills and developing collaborations with external partners.

Professor Alex Neill, Vice-President Education, congratulated the team: “The Southampton MOOC team, with FutureLearn, have been pioneers in developing different perspectives on online education. Their work transforms the teaching and learning landscape.”

Professor Anna Barney, Associate Vice-President Education added her congratulations: “The MOOC team have inspired enthusiasm for the ideas and practice of digital education and innovated in learning and teaching.”

Alison Johns, Chief Executive of Advance HE, said, “Teamwork has been especially important in the past year with the challenges for teaching and learning as a result of social distancing and in the autumn we will publish case studies highlighting this excellent collaborative effort. I am sure that institutions will value these examples as we start to return to the best of in-person teaching complemented by excellent online delivery.”

Advance HE is a member-led, sector-owned charity that works with institutions and higher education across the world to improve higher education for staff, students and society.
