In memory of David Cooper

David Cooper was one of the original three ship scientists, with Geoff Goodrich and John Wellicome, who created the Ship Science degree here at Southampton, and for a number of years taught all of the ship science modules between them.

David joined Southampton in 1971 after teaching at Welbeck College. He started his career as an apprentice at Chatham docks before joining the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors. He helped create the ethos and culture of the Ship Science programme that still endures today and helps ensure that student satisfaction is amongst the highest within the University.

David also spent many years as Associate Dean for Infrastructure in what was the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Those who understand frame numbering systems on board ships have always appreciated the room numbering conventions adopted in Building 13, amongst others!

David, despite retiring in 1991 carried on teaching Structures tutorials for a number of years, and as a local resident could often be met in Portswood. He was a regular attendee at Alumni events and joined us, with his wife Elaine, at the Ship Science 50th anniversary dinner in March 2019.

All those who worked with, or were taught by David remember his inimitable style, good humour and his steadfast support.
