Saturday 28 August 2021 heralds the fifth year of Southampton Pride. It is a free fun day for all ages and includes a variety of stalls and activities to get involved in, as well as live music and performances.
The University of Southampton is proud to sponsor the event again and the University’s Pulse LGBT+ Staff Network will be marching in the Parade and have a stall on the day. Sponsoring Pride supports the University’s Strategic Plan – Equality, Diversity and Inclusion to build an inclusive community where “we intentionally lead and influence social change,” and everyone “feels welcomed for who [they] are.”
The Pride Parade, which runs through the city, will depart from Queens Park at 11:00 and end at Guildhall Square at approximately 12 noon.
First started in 2016, Southampton Pride was born from a vigil held after the tragic loss of life from the shooting at the Pulse night club in Orlando, Florida. 5,000 people participated in the first year and it has become bigger each year. The last event in 2019 saw approximately 17,500 people taking part.
To keep everyone safe, in the current COVID circumstances, the event will take place fully outdoors and not within the Guildhall as in previous years. Mayflower Studio Theatres will provide a Quiet Room for those that need it and a British Sign Language interpreter will be present on the main stage. There will also be an after-party event at The Edge which will run for 12 hours.
