Southampton joins the Purpose Coalition

Our University has joined the Purpose Coalition, an organisation dedicated to bringing together businesses, NHS Trusts, Councils and universities for the common purpose of increasing social mobility.

Chaired by Southampton alumna Justine Greening, MP, the coalition is based around 14 ‘Levelling Up Goals’ that cover a range of key areas linked to social mobility including early years support, closing the digital divide, and fair career progression.

Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E. Smith, commented:

“Given the role education of all types plays in social mobility, we are delighted to be joining this Coalition.”

“As we continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and our society and economy changes shape, putting social change and levelling up at the heart of what we do will be essential.

“It is great to see this project spear-headed by one of our own alumni, which demonstrates the launch pad a Southampton University education can provide. Working with other local partners to deliver this will reinforce our commitment to our civic role.”

Our University is fully committed to the social mobility agenda, with well-established and continuously developing widening participation programmes such as Access to Southampton (A2S) and Ignite.
