Southampton researchers are looking for healthy people between 40 and 75 years of age to take part in a study aiming to improve care for those with the respiratory condition chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It aims to better understand disease mechanisms, to inform development of new treatments.
Fighting lung disease
COPD is a chronic lung condition which affects around three million people in the UK, causing breathing difficulties, coughing, wheezing, and is made worse – often life threatening – by infections and illness.
The Microbiology & Immunology of the Chronically-Inflamed Airway II (MICA II) study aims to enhance our understanding of the role of small airways disease in COPD exacerbations by comparing people with COPD and those who have no diagnosed lung conditions. It forms part of our wider programme of COPD research, all aimed at improving care and quality of life for those with the condition.
Taking part
The COPD research team is keen to hear from healthy people interested in taking part in studies such as MICA II, to contribute to better COPD care. Typically these studies involve a number of respiratory tests and assessments at University Hospital Southampton; the team wants to hear from you if you can spare time to see them for four to five visits and are:
- Aged 40 to 75 years and in good health
- Either an ex-smoker or current smoker
- Have no diagnosed respiratory conditions
All travel expenses you incur will be reimbursed together with payment for your time.
