Dame Sharon White DBE, Chair of the globally renowned John Lewis Partnership, led this year’s annual Helen Alexander Memorial Lecture with the overarching theme of Women on Business.

Dame Helen Alexander was Chancellor of the University of Southampton between 2011 and 2017 and was an extraordinary, pioneering, and much-loved figure known for her humanity and inclusive approach to business.

Now in its fourth year, this annual lecture took the form of a virtual fireside chat, with Dame Sharon, who previously served as the Chief Executive of Ofcom and Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist. Dame Sharon discussed her personal success in business and the importance of “purpose”.
This lecture is supported by Dame Helen’s family and by four organisations with which she was closely associated: The Confederation of British Industry (CBI), The Economist, the University of Southampton and Informa. The University is proud to honour the close association we held with Dame Helen, upholding her remarkable legacy and ensuring the core values of the lecture and the University continue to be celebrated for many years.
