The member consultation into changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) began on Monday 1 November 2021 and will close Monday 17 January 2022.
Pensions expert Brendan Mulkern will be running three dedicated briefing sessions to help colleagues gain a greater understanding of the proposed changes to the USS pension scheme, the consultation process, and more.
Sessions will be held on 29 and 30 November, and 1 December 2021. Full details, including how to book your place, can be found toward the bottom of this post.
What will Brendan talk about?
Brendan’s upcoming presentation will:
- cover the consultation on proposed changes to the USS pension scheme
- provide a recap on why the consultation is taking place
- set out the proposed changes to members’ future benefits
- review the materials provided by the consultation website, including the benefits modeller
- give an overview of the consultation process, specifically, how staff can make a response to the proposal and how member responses will be considered, and
- include a Question and Answer segment to provide colleagues with the chance to raise queries about any aspect of the proposed changes, as well as other USS-related matters

Brendan Mulkern’s background
Brendan has been involved in the management and administration of workplace pensions for over 30 years, with pension schemes like the Local Government Pension Scheme and USS (up to 2016, he was head of policy for the USS trustee company). Brendan has spoken to many scheme member audiences, and aims to bring a helpful clarity to his presentations.
