As you may have read in the UEB Blog, in September UEB agreed a proposal for a modest, and low-cost refresh to our current University logo.
The current University logo was designed and implemented in 2009. It is a simple, hand drawn, word marque that, while making a significant and positive change from the previous logo, no longer provides a visual link that exemplifies and distinguishes the University of Southampton.
As we prepare to launch a new University Strategy in 2022, this is an obvious time to refresh our logo with a simple, cost-effective upgrade that adds a combination of heritage, modernity and confidence that better reflects our place in the world, our newly stated aspirations, and adds more distinctiveness.
The selected design is based on an evolution of our current hand drawn word marque. To this has been added a shield design, which is derived from the University’s heraldic crest.
Together, this new logo looks bold and assertive, whilst adding an emblem which signifies heritage, which we know is a particular factor in some international territories.
The implementation will take place on an iterative basis to manage costs. It will initially be rolled out on our digital assets (e.g. website, templates) and on a very select number of key University signs on each of our UK campuses. All other existing assets will be updated with the new logo only as and when they need replacing.
Communications and Marketing are working with the design agency and colleagues across the University to prepare for a soft launch in January 2022. We will provide an update and links to the logo as soon as they are available for use, in the meantime, please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions
