Southampton’s Technician Commitment 3-Year Action Plan launched

The Technician Commitment Implementation Group (TCIG) are delighted to have submitted Southampton’s self-assessment, to the Science Council. The second stage of self-assessment is now complete and asked us to reflect on the past 24-month action plan (2019-2021), our progress and engagement and to develop the next 36-month action plan (2022 – 2024).

These documents have been published and you can view them on the links below:

Technician Commitment 36-month Action Plan

The TCIG have already started work on the action plan and are currently working with the National Technician Development Centre to launch a technical skills survey in January 2022. This will support the continuing professional development of staff and provide a more comprehensive understanding of the depth and breadth of technical skills at Southampton. All technical staff and their line managers will receive further information about this in the coming weeks, and news of the 2022 Technician Conference, so save the date of 30 March.

Professor Michael Butler, Dean and Executive Sponsor for Southampton Technician Commitment comments,

“Technical staff play in integral role in University of Southampton’s success, ensuring the smooth operation of a broad range of scientific and creative facilities and supporting our staff to deliver excellent education, research and enterprise, as well as contributing to an outstanding experience for our undergraduate and postgraduate community. Through our Technician Commitment programme, we are working hard to implement change in every area to ensure technical staff are valued, are visible, succeed with their career ambitions and we have a sustainable pipeline of talent for the University’s future.”

Professor Mark Spearing, Vice-President Research and Enterprise and Chair of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee said,

“I am delighted that we have successfully submitted our stage two self-assessment and action plan.  This will allow us to further strengthen our commitment to our technicians and research technical professionals and to ensure that their work is fully recognised and that they are supported on an equal basis to everyone else in our University community.  As a researcher and teacher I have personally benefitted immensely from technicians routinely going above and beyond their job descriptions at every stage of my career”.
