New Year’s Honour for former Chief Operating Officer

Our former Chief Operating Officer (COO), Richard Middleton, has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours.

Richard, who spent seven years as Chair of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, has been recognised for his services to the Commonwealth and Higher Education.

He took up his post as interim COO at the University of Southampton in January 2020 and stayed until December 2021. Prior to this he had served in a wide range of leadership roles at several UK universities.

Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E. Smith, offered his congratulations:

“I’m delighted that Richard’s contribution to higher education and in particular his service to the Commonwealth have been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours. He made a fantastic contribution to our university as our Chief Operating Officer for two years until late 2021 and I know many of you will wish to join me in congratulating him on this well-deserved achievement.”
