TEDx Southampton University returns in 2022

The Public Engagement with Research unit (PERu) is delighted to be bringing TEDx Southampton University back to Southampton this year. The event will take place on Saturday 18 June in the Turner Sims concert hall on Highfield Campus. For full details, including the speaker line-up and link to register, keep an eye on the official event page.

The event lead, Dr Tony Curran, said, “I’m so excited we’re continuing the run of TEDx events in Southampton this year, for the benefit of the University and wider Southampton community. People and teams across the University and the city are supporting the event, to ensure it will be a stimulating and enjoyable day.”

Do you want to get involved? There are four options for doing so:

  • Help to run the event. Express interest using this form
  • Have an idea worth spreading? Students and staff are encouraged to pitch their talk idea using this form. You can also make contact with Tony by email – [email protected]
  • Graphic design whizz? If you’d like to propose a visual design for the event, get in touch for more info ([email protected])
  • Attend the event: check the event page or follow the PERu Twitter account for the announcement of when registration is open (likely March)

Nine speakers will present a variety of thought-provoking ideas to spark discussion and connections. There will also be short audio-visual performances and refreshments.

The first confirmed speaker is alumnus Owen Gaffney. Owen’s talk, ‘The planetary emergency: this decade critical’, will reveal the science that shows the planetary emergency we face, and how the necessary changes are within our power through ‘positive tipping points’. Owen’s recent co-authored book ‘Breaking Boundaries’ features a foreword by Greta Thunberg, and the documentary of the book on Netflix is narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

This will be the tenth TEDx put on in Southampton by members of the University. The first took place on campus in 2013, and they have since toured venues including the Berry Theatre in Eastleigh (2016) and Nuffield Guildhall Square (2018). Many of the talks can be found on YouTube.
