Race Equality: Focus Groups & Race Experience Survey Update

Share your experiences.

We would like to invite staff and students to a series of online focus groups so we can explore race-related issues at the University and make meaningful change.

Race Experience Survey

Thank-you to everyone who took the time to respond to the race experience survey. 1560 staff members and 714 students took part in the survey last December which forms part of a wider project to help us better understand the University’s culture and advance race equality.

Our strategy has people at its core, and being an inclusive community is fundamental to achieving our vision. As part of this, we are currently working towards an application for the Race Equality Charter (REC) Bronze Award. The charter provides a framework through which universities can critically self-assess and identify areas of racial inequality to inform action. Applying for the bronze award is the first step in our journey and we know there is a lot of work to be done. The Bronze award is given to Universities who have a solid understanding of the issues, recognise the scale of change required and can demonstrate commitment and preparation to act.

The feedback you have shared through the survey will inform our assessment of the University and help us build our race equality action plan. We will be sharing our findings and action plan later this year.

Next Steps

The survey feedback has been sobering and there are a number of issues and themes emerging from the data we want to explore further, and to continue the conversation we will be hosting a number of confidential focus groups.

Developing solutions to racial inequities and achieving long-term institutional culture change is complex and requires an honest, open and non-judgmental dialogue by the entire University community.  Such dialogues help us understand where we are now and what we need to do: all so we can prioritise actions that will positively impact the experience of staff and students from all ethnic backgrounds.

Join an Online Focus Group

To reflect the diversity of the University we would like to encourage staff and students from all backgrounds, and across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to participate.

There will be focus groups specifically for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) staff and students while the others will welcome non-BAME participants.

They will last approximately 80 minutes and take place in February and March.

To register your interest please fill in the form and we will be in touch.*

For attending students you will receive a £10 gift voucher for your choice of Amazon or Love2Shop.

Statement of confidentiality

All discussions will remain confidential, and feedback will be shared in themes and any quotations used in subsequent reporting will be anonymised.

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you.
