International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March, is an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements and campaign for equality for women at home, at work and across the world. This year’s theme is #Breakthebias and we have a series of thought-provoking events for colleagues and students to join.

- WISE is hosting a webinar on International Women’s Day, supported by RAF Engineering, that may be of interest to your students. Celebrating women in STEM, the webinar will showcase the variety of roles, career progression opportunities and best practice within RAF Engineering. It’s a chance to hear from inspirational role models at entry, mid-career and leadership level within RAF Engineering.
Building our gender equality
As a university we are continually working to become more inclusive and remove gender parity. With much work underway:
- Since 2014/15 we have increased the number of female professors by a third, with an increase of 50% in STEM
- We hold a Silver Athena Swan award as an institution, with departments continuing to apply and achieve bronze and silver awards.
- Medicine, the most recent department to be granted a silver award have introduced EDI training that boasts an 85% completion rate as well as:
- We have implemented women only preparing for promotion sessions, introduced Academic Career Development committees in each School and launched a super-recruiter project – these projects focus on supporting under-represented groups apply for jobs and progress in their careers
