Basketball Club All-Star event returns successfully after two years

On Saturday 19 February, the Southampton University Basketball Club (SUBC) held their All-Star event for the first time in two years. The annual fundraising and biggest basketball event of the year was a remarkable success; it saw a record number of almost 200 attendees, two games, competitions, prizes, as well as performances by the cheerleading team, the Vixens.

The event started off with a competitive game between members of the club (old and new) and the Chinese Association Team. This game was won by the SUBC members with a 14-point advantage.

The second game of the day showcased the club’s current talent and ended with a score of 77 to 68. Fourth year Electrical and Electronic Engineering student and SUBC Vice-President Matthew De Miguel Finch described the game as ‘fun and electrifying,’ with ‘threes, blocks, crossovers, and possibly the best dunk ever seen in SUBC history, with an amazing 360°.’ He also added that the All-Star event ‘was a day to remember, and we already look forward to next year’s!’

Basketball players on the side happy about their game

When asked about the significance of playing basketball as part of the SUBC team and university life, third year Mechanical Engineering student and SUBC President Jack Searson said: ‘Being part of the university basketball team has really elevated my university experience. Not only is it a great way to keep fit and compete at a high level, it’s also a lot of fun and somewhere I’ve made lifelong friends. It can be a struggle at times to fit it all in when work builds up, but I always try to make it work as training is a great way to break up the day and refresh your mind.’

James Topping, University of Southampton Operations Manager for Sport and Wellbeing, added: ‘We were very proud to hold this All-Star basketball event again, as it promotes inclusivity of our diverse community. Well done to the Basketball committee for organising a fun and safe event that was also showcasing to prospective students on the Highfield Campus open day.’
